We're in Scotland!
Helllllllloooooo from Edinburgh (pronounced Ehhhhh-din-bruh, don't be going all American on me and calling it Eeeee-den-burgh). Scotland is lovely and I have decided that I need a Scottish friend. I need to work on trying to talk to people here, but I suck so that probably won't happen haha. Tonight is our second night here. Yesterday I was so tired that I could not function enough to write. I did not sleep after my nap (that nap was a terrible idea, I slept for like 6 hours) until 8AM yesterday and I only got to sleep until 10AM because I had to check out and then meet Alice (but I did go get Nando's that night and finish a book when I was supposed to be sleeping, so it's okay, I'm not even that mad about it). Yesterday seemed like a super long day. I waited in the train station for about an hour and a half, and then once I had found Alice, we headed to Kings Cross to get our train to Edinburgh. We had first class seats, but were not sat next to each other, so it was a long 4 and a half hour train ride. The scenery in Northern England is lovely though, I need to go to Durham and Newcastle, they were the prettiest.
Once we arrived here, we took a taxi to the flat and met the lady who owns it. This place is adorable and she bought us a bottle of wine and some milk for our tea. We have to pull a cord and then push a button in order to shower and we have to lock ourselves in with keys and a chain and when we leave, we lock two locks but when we come back we have to unlock three. It's really strange. Anyway. We got here, settled in for a bit, and got ready to go out and eat. When we stepped outside it was super windy and cold and rainy, so we went to Sainsburys and picked up some frozen pizzas, ice cream, and cereal and had that for our dinner. It was pretty good, plus I was completely exhausted.
Today we got up, got ready and headed out. We visited Edinburgh Castle, which was not as exciting as all the other castles I've been too, which was a bit sad, and The Elephant House Cafe. At the castle, the guy that sold us our tickets (Graeme, which is like Graham just spelled funny, although they say Gray-am and we just Gram at home. So weird.) asked where we were from. When I told him I was from Utah, he said he was just reading up on the history of Utah. How weird is that?? He asked if I was from Iron County, I had to look up where that was because I had no idea, he probably knows more about my state than I do. The Elephant House Cafe was one of the few things I demanded we do while we were here since it is where JK Rowling had started writing Harry Potter. It was very disappointing. They used the fact that JK Rowling had written part of the first book there way too much, it cheapened it. There is a huge sign in the front window and you can buy shirts and it seemed like it said "Birthplace of Harry Potter everywhere in the cafe. The staff wasn't very nice and there were so many tables it was nearly impossible to get around without knocking someone in the head with your tray. The food was okay, I think I would have preferred to eat at the Nando's across the street though.
After the cafe, we wondered for about an hour and ended up walking through a park called The Meadows I believe. It was nice and there were some really cool apartments that looked like castles, but we really had no idea which way the flat was, so we started to head back. When we got here, we were tired, but we did our best to plan out our last two days here and then we took a nap. After the nap, we called a taxi (because it was raining and walking in the rain and wind is not fun) and went to a place called Whiski Bar & Restaurant. It was excellent. We each had chicken with wild mushroom sauce, two whisky cocktails, a Scottish beer called Fraoch Heather Ale, which was recommended to us by our very attractive waiter named Kyle, and we shared (I say shared but I ate most of it :)) a hot chocolate fudge cake. We were there for about four hours because we got there kinda early, ate, and then wanted to wait for the Scottish folk singers to come on. It was great. They were great. I bought a CD. ***The pictures that correspond with this paragraph are above it because I am too lazy to move them. Some of the pictures are not the right way up it's late and I am too tired to figure out how to flip them, so deal.***
Then we got a taxi home and now here I am, sitting on my futon bed, trying to get all of my photos in import so I can put them in this post. It is after 1AM, so I want it to move quicker. Tomorrow we are going on a hike to the top of Arthur's Seat and possibly up to Nelson's Monument. Hopefully we get to go to a store that sells marshmallows too, they have beer flavored ones that I am dying to try. I hope everyone is doing well and I miss all you lovely people at home <3
